Chrysanthemums

derived from the Greek words chrysos (gold) and anthemon (flower)

Chrysanthemums were cultivated in China as far back as the 15th century B.C. Known to represent wealth, fidelity and truth, the flower is often boiled to make a sweet drink, known as “chrysanthemum tea". A flower traditionally given to one's mother on Mother's Day, it was also studied in a NASA clean air study, and shown to reduce indoor air pollution!

Watering
  • Avoid letting the soil dry out in a Chrysanthemum. They require watering every day, to every other day, depending on their temperature and light level.
  • Water the pot from above until water runs out the bottom of the pot. Do not allow your mum to sit in water, as this will harm the plant.
Plant Light
  • Chrysanthemums prefer bright, indirect sunlight
  • Avoid direct afternoon light, which can be too intense and burn the flowers.
Temperature
  • Mums perform best at home and office temperatures. You will see it thrive at 15 to 20°C, or 60 to 65°F.
  • Avoid placing Mums on appliances that give off heat, such as a radio or television, or near heater vents or windy locations. This tends to dry out the plant quicker.

If I plant this flower in my garden, will it bloom again?

Chrysanthemums are short day plants. This means that they need more darkness than light to bloom. Chrysanthemums will naturally bloom during the fall season because the days become shorter. In the greenhouse, we manipulate the light by shading the plants when it is still light outside. By doing this, the flowers will bloom when we need them to. If you plant your Chrysanthemum in the garden between May – July, it will bloom naturally some time in October.

Some of the blooms on my plant do not look good, what should I do?

Do not be afraid to pull off old blooms from your plant. When you get rid of a bloom, the energy of the plant can go to other blooms and make them open. If the buds are still not open beneath the blooms you pulled off, place the plant by a window so that it can use the energy from the sun to open more blooms.
